This is the April 1979 cover of Heavy Metal Magazine’s second anniversary issue, featuring a striking, surreal illustration of a grotesque, mechanical humanoid face emerging from a glowing, glass-like dome that resembles a brain or a futuristic cityscape, with intricate gears, wires, and metallic structures encircling its head and mouth. The figure’s eyes are wide and intense, its mouth agape with a tongue protruding, and its face is entwined with complex, sci-fi machinery, suggesting a fusion of organic and mechanical elements. The background is a starry space scene with planets and flying craft, reinforcing the magazine’s adult-illustrated fantasy theme. The title “HEAVY METAL” dominates the top in bold red letters, with the price of $1.50 and the date “April 1979” in the upper right corner, and a diagonal banner in the upper left declares it the “SECOND ANNIVERSARY ISSUE!” The overall aesthetic is dark, detailed, and otherworldly, capturing the magazine’s signature blend of science fiction, fantasy, and eroticism.
